Debian Installer Stretch Alpha 7 release

The Debian Installer team[1] is pleased to announce the seventh alpha
release of the installer for Debian 9 “Stretch”.

Improvements in this release

  • debian-installer:
    • Bump Linux kernel version from 4.5.0-2 to 4.6.0-1.
    • Bump kfreebsd (kernel) version to 10.3.
    • Produce two beeps when booted with grub instead of one, so the
      user knows she has to use the grub way to edit entries.
  • syslinux:
    • Fix input on the boot prompt being ignored (#823459).

Hardware support changes

  • debian-installer:
    • Add u-boot config script for Seagate Personal Cloud and Seagate
    • Use XZ compression for QNAP on Kirkwood due to size
    • Mark fb-modules as required for armhf’s netboot-gtk flavour.
    • ARM: orion5x: Add a few Linkstation devices to netboot target.
    • ARM: orion5x: Change initrd to XZ compression for all
      orion5x-based Linkstation devices.
    • Add mipsel octeon images.
    • Drop mipsel cobalt support.
    • Add mips64el support.
    • Drop mipsel/loongson-2e and mipsel/loongson-2f images.
  • hw-detect:
    • Stop trying to install obsolete optimized libc packages
      (libc6-i686 and libc6-sparcv9b).
    • Embed a filename-to-package mapping for firmwares, to be used at
      a later point.
  • libdebian-installer:
    • Add mips64el support.
    • Add EFI detection on armhf.
    • Check both efivars and vars under /sys/firmware/efi to decide
      whether EFI mode is enabled (#826665).
  • linux:
    • [arm64] udeb: Add fb-modules.
    • [mips*/*-malta] udeb: Add ata-modules package.
  • network-console:
    • Remove more Cobalt-related code.
  • rootskel:
    • Remove NSLU2 support code.
  • u-boot:
    • Add Jetson TX1 (P2371-2180) target (#825458).
    • Add arm64 arch.
    • Fix guruplug.config (#781873).
    • Add odroid-xu3 target, tested on Odroid-XU4.
    • u-boot-omap: Add support for dra74_evm (#824730).
    • Fix voltages used on several OlinuXino Lime board variants

Localization status

  • 75 languages are supported in this release.
  • Full translation for none of them (due to a recently discovered
    bug), but 66 languages have a mostly completed translation.

Known bugs in this release

  • There seems to be no known major bug as of yet.
